Independent Labels are Small Businesses
Small Independent Record Labels are small businesses. The owners of these labels are small business owners and the independent artist is a contractor. Independent music is music produced independently from major commercial record labels or their subsidiary companies. This technique is a process that may include an autonomous approach to recording and publishing.
The serious producers and artists launch independent labels as an outlet for their work and often create innovative developments that stand apart from the big time major commercial record labels.
Grass Roots Level
In the United States there is a trend in which independent labels, producers and distributors often band together to form organizations to promote trade and parity within the industry but at the same time leave out the college educated, self determined small business owners who simply want a fair shot in the market.
In low-income African American communities the statistics are even more disparaging and the definition of an independent record label takes on a different connotation because of racism and red-lining of these communities to keep the residents from receiving certain resources such as equal opportunity, home ownership, small business loans, quality education and quality affordable health care.
